Earth Bound is a musical in two acts that was first performed in Prague in 2021. It was originally written for teenage students of Jeviště, a language school that specializes in teaching English through drama and theatre. The plot revolves around the theme of space explorations, but also touches the topics of environmental activism, friendship, family, and greed. It became the largest and most demanding production in the school’s history, and in the end the cast was composed of 22 members, from pre-schoolers to university students, including guest actors from outside the school. The rehearsals started in 2019, but the production process was paused several times due to the coronavirus pandemic. More than two years later, while still dealing with obstacles such as restrictions, quarantines, and people getting sick, the play finally opened and closed in one weekend. Despite its success, it was impossible to keep the project going, and the focus shifted towards recording the music.
The story:
Dorothy, an elderly author of highly successful science fiction stories, receives a lifetime achievement award. Her bestselling novel ‘Spacelings’ has now reached 12 volumes and she is working on the 13th. All readers are waiting for it anxiously, hoping that their favorite heroes, the children on the starship Hope, will finally find a new Earth. But Dorothy has a cruel fate in store for her astronauts and a shock for her readers. Maybe that’s why she’s been sleeping so poorly lately. The characters she created are beginning to visit her and demand a happy ending…
