Journeys 02:27
Go, go, go, go Slowly, slowly Faster, faster Go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go Go every morning, every night, every second of the day In the dark, in the light, close or really far away Here and there, to and fro, someone’s always on their way From point A to point B, sometimes never back to A Every morning, every night, in the present, long ago But you don’t always decide about where you’re going to go Every dawn, every dusk, every turning of the years It’s a choice. It’s a task. It’s the only hope I see. I want to go where I want. It’s my life and I have plans Well it’s about time you learned it’s not always in your hands If you dare, you may fight, but there’s not much of a chance I’m so scared, someone there, will you tell me how this ends? Go through the day, through the night, look and tell me, can you see From the window left and right, what is there ahead of me? Is there life? Is there death? Is there love? No, is there food? Will I ever smile and say: it all happened for the good?

Sail, sail, sail away Dream up a song to get through the day Sleep, sleep, close your eyes It won’t be long. They say that time flies PHEBE AND ANN: So far away? All on my own? COMPANY: Rock-a-bye baby, you’ve got to grow PHEBE AND ANN: So far away? For three muslin shawls? COMPANY: When the bough breaks the cradle just falls Sail, sail, sail away... PHEBE AND ANN: So far away? To the end of the world? COMPANY: Hush, little baby, don’t say a word PHEBE AND ANN: Thousands of miles? To a land upside down? COMPANY: You are no longer the sweetest in town Sail, sail, sail away…

JOACHIM: The only lighthouse in these foggy times The only seed of hope The only drop of dreams left in my mind The only chance we’ll cope Is somewhere on the way Between now and good old days The only touch of sweet taste on this bitter plate COMPANY How do you find a black horse in the dark A needle in the hay I have already given all I’ve got How come there’s more to pay? It’s not what we had planned But there’s no on the other hand The only touch of sweet taste in a foreign land JOACHIM: Somewhere on the railroad in a village or a little town With some luck and a bit of courage we shall get there safe and sound Maybe in a city or maybe in the middle of a battlefield But I won’t ’rest until we find it, I won’t yield COMPANY The only lighthouse... --------- JOACHIM: Well I can't move a mountain, can I? So what to say? This is it. Let’s see how we begin, let’s save the day. SON: Let’s have some chocolate! JOACHIM: Not exactly our dream But those hundred towers gleam Across the river, in the night And something tells me this is right COMPANY: The only lighthouse in these foggy times The only seed of hope The only drop of dreams left in my mind The only chance we’ll cope Is right here, so let’s start In what they call the heart Of Europe, and let’s hope we’ll never part Let’s see if our new home could be called... SON Prague

Mango 04:40
VALENTIN: Mango… This foreign word sounds like a magic spell Should we go? Can we succeed? Only time will tell ----- THEODOR: And soon one of these boats Is going to bring back loads and loads Of fruits divine, most wanted kind I feel it in my bones The memory so clear, two little friends long ago Sitting on the pier, watching the ships come and go Already then we knew that we wanted something new And now’s the time, horizon line - Is calling me and you VALENTIN: Mango, this word sounds like a magic spell Should we go? THEODOR: Oh come on trust me we’ll do well Cause you have always been Like my brother, like my twin No thunderstorm will see us torn Apart, we’re bound to win VALENTIN AND THEODOR: Behn Meyer, Meyer Behn What a wonderful sounding name We’re gonna make it In the big, big world we’re gonna make it We have waited long enough, now it’s time It might be tough but we’ll be fine We’re gonna make it We might make mistakes but we’ll make it We’ve got all it takes The name that we created So strong nothing can break it So strong nothing can break it ------ VALENTIN The memory so clear, two little friends long ago Sitting on the pier, watching the ships come and go You have always been Like my brother, like my twin No thunderstorm will see us torn… apart

Suitcases 02:33
You know somewhere there’s a suitcase Light or heavy, square or round And then one day you decide That you want to look inside You climb up and take it down You know somewhere there’s a suitcase Dark or funny, strange or sweet And then you ask for the key And you open it and see There maybe a way to meet... A person who may have been a bit like you And if they are watching you bet they’re a fan And they’ve left a story and most of it’s true The rest you must make up as best as you can The details of all those hellos and good-byes The yeses and nos and the hows and the whys The running and sailing and airplanes and bridges And houses and factories and a train station, CONDUCTOR: Which is……a good place to start and a good place to end But before we go I would recommend Not to forget your belongings please And let’s take a picture of this moment. Cheese! ALL ‘Cause this is where the loose ends touch The present meets the past And that’s how we got cast So thank you very much You know somewhere there’s a suitcase With a message from afar Packed by someone long ago Claim it, hold it, don’t let go Look inside and here we are Look inside and here we are.

about

"Journeys" was an original play performed by Story Theatre, a children's troupe from Prague led by Leah Gaffen. It was a musical based on true stories of the cast members' ancestors, with each story centered around a life-changing journey. The material was transformed into a captivating script by Leah Gaffen, and the songs were written by Bara Dockalova. The fast moving, dynamic and highly personal show, where characters were played by their real descendents, moved many audiences and won the Czech National Children's Theatre Festival in June 2019, which subsequently led to the recording of the songs. So here they are.
